Five signs your switchboard is overdue for an upgrade

Your switchboard quietly does one of the most important jobs in your home: it splits the incoming power into circuits and cuts that power the instant something goes wrong. Older boards were never designed for the number of appliances a modern home runs, and they often lack the safety switches (RCDs) that protect you from a shock. Here are five signs it is time to look at an upgrade. One, you still have ceramic fuses with fuse wire rather than circuit breakers. Two, the board trips often, especially when a few appliances run at once. Three, there is no RCD protection, meaning a fault could become a shock rather than a tripped switch. Four, you are renovating or adding load, like a heat pump, a hob or an EV charger, that the existing board was never sized for. Five, there are signs of age you can see or smell: scorch marks, a burning smell, or a warm board. If any of these sound familiar, it is worth a look. An upgrade is usually a straightforward job, and it is a lot cheaper to plan than to deal with at midnight. Give us a call and we will take a look.
